Saving Water

Water is a scarce commodity in a motorhome. We generally try to make our water tank last as long as possible, not least because the water at home is very pure and soft.

Yes, we always set off with a full fresh water tank, but that's easy for us because we have a lot of spare payload. Modern motorhomes tend to be built to a rather unrealistic weight limit.

We always drink from our water tank. Apart from being very ungreen, bottled water is extremely unhealthy: the plasticisers in the bottle leak chemicals into the water. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors (see https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21050888/ for example).
You really don't want them in your body. To minimise this, the bottles have use by dates, but thse only apply if you keep the bottles cool all the time. Bottles of water are enough faff without having to keep them cool!

So how do we minimise our water use? Mostly by not using it when not necessary.

For example, you really don't need to even moisten your toothbrush before brushing. a small blob of toothpaste on the brush is all you need.
When washing, a small bowl of warm water and a flannel is just fine.
If you must have a shower, turn the shower on to wet yourself, then turn it off whilst you soap and scrub, then turn it on again to rinse.
When using the toilet, aim carefully to avoid the need to flush.
For washing up, try to minimise the sessions. A of water bowl for washing two plates and two mugs is a waste.

Of course, it is also prudent to top up the water tank when the possibility arises.
